What are quartz crystals?

From the elegant rock crystal to the exuberant tiger’s eye, all these crystals share a common ancestor: quartz. One of the most widespread minerals on Earth, so widespread that we even find it as an integral part of our bodies. An essential component of bones and cartilage, of the formation of connective tissue and assisting in various physiological processes.

The variety of colours and shapes of quartz crystals is the result of a formation process, influenced by geological factors such as pressure, temperature and the presence of other substances. The typical six-sided shape is a distinctive characteristic of quartz crystals, due to its trigonal crystal structure. A structure characterised by six faces and a triangular pyramid shape, which gives quartz crystal not only its unique beauty but also its remarkable hardness and strength.

What are quartz crystals?

In the world of crystal therapy, quartz crystals are highly valued for their energetic properties. Each one is associated with different benefits, such as regeneration, shielding and balance. Let’s discover together which are the most famous quartz crystals and their properties!

Silicon dioxides (silica), of which quartz is the main representative, contain a wide variety of gems. Besides the well-known quartz rock and amethyst crystals, we also find the microcrystalline varieties of chalcedony and the agate characterised by its coloured bands.

Given the vastness of the subject, we will focus exclusively on crystalline quartz in this in-depth study, postponing other fascinating varieties such as chalcedony and agate to future analyses.

What are the unique properties of quartz crystals?

Besides their aesthetic beauty, quartz crystals are prized for their energetic properties. The vibrations of the crystals are believed to interact with our energy field or aura, through the Chakras (energy vortices from which energy exchange occurs). Depending on the type of quartz and its impurities, the vibrations emitted can act on different aspects of our lives, promoting physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

The body does not assimilate the silicon contained in the quartz crystal, but responds to the vibrations it emits, helping to restore the energy balance. This is why it is considered a vibrational remedy. Let’s discover together the main varieties of quartz and their vibrational characteristics.

#Rock Crystal or Hyaline Quartz

Often called just quartz, it is the most common crystal, known for its purity and versatility. It is the purest and most transparent form of colourless, crystalline quartz, so much so that the Greeks called it the ‘eternal ice’. For them, it was not just a rock but a symbol of purity, power and connection to the divine. Its unique properties made it a precious stone used in many aspects of daily and religious life.

Quartz crystal

Physical properties of rock crystal at the vibrational level:

  • Improves skin, bones, cartilage and tendon health;
  • It increases the body’s efficiency in utilising nutrients;
  • It reduces inflammation and accelerates wound regeneration;
  • It promotes restful sleep that can result in an improved quality of life;

Psychological properties of rock crystal on a vibrational level:

  • It encourages open and creative thinking;
  • It improves self-esteem and boosts self-confidence;
  • It helps to understand the universe and find a deeper sense of connection;

How do I use rock crystal?

Personally I always have a rock crystal in my bedroom, it helps me to rest better. When I have moments of confusion, of important choices, I carry with me a particular quartz called master crystal. A crystal of exceptional purity and distinct shape is considered as a Master crystal, believed to impart extensive knowledge to those who utilize it. Sometimes I wear it, sometimes I do meditations with it to help mental clarity.

My customers

I always recommend quartz to my clients when they have difficulty sleeping or are a little stressed by life that always leads them to project outwards. In the first treatments I use quartz, which is more neutral and gentle. When a client presents with emotional states of confusion or bewilderment, I recommend wearing a quartz crystal even for long periods. Quartz has the vibrational ability to bring you back to the centre from where you can start again recharged and regenerated, it makes you feel at peace and more serene.

We explore other varieties of quartz crystals and their unique properties: from rose quartz to amethyst via citrine, each crystal carries special energies for physical and mental wellbeing.

#Rose Quartz

Rose or Pink quartz acquires its signature color from the inclusions of other minerals, which vary in intensity based on their concentration. It is traditionally seen as a symbol of unconditional love and self-healing.

During a section of crystaltherapy I always place a rose quartz on my clients’ hearts to harmonise and amplify the treatment. This way what comes up, in terms of emotions, is gentle and delicate and does not have too explosive a manifestation. For clients who have experienced a period of emotional difficulty, I find that using rose quartz brings considerable relief and clients also report improved interpersonal relationships. Rose quartz crystal has a healing power on the heart.

#Amethyst

The name of this variety of this quartz crystal comes from the Greek and means that “cannot get drunk”, a name due to its ability to promote a clear mind. In this regard, the myth of Amethyst and the god of wine poetically explains this crystal with its peculiar colour. Ovid tells how Bacchus, hopelessly in love with the nymph Amethyst of rare beauty and purity, begins to pursue her. Resolved to win her over, he pursues her through the forest; the terrified nymph seeks refuge in Diana’s protection, who, to safeguard her, turns her into a pristine crystal. Bacchus, known for his irascibility, hurls his cup of wine at this crystal, which stains it, giving it its characteristic colour.

The Amethyst is similar to the first two crystals in composition, it contains traces of iron that give it a violet colour. Like most quartz crystals, amethyst is also known for its calming and spiritual properties.

Physical properties at the vibrational level of Amethyst

Amethyst quartz
  • It promotes concentration and efficient thinking;
  • Useful for overcoming obsessions and uncontrolled mechanisms;
  • It makes one aware and coherent about one’s situations and helps one to deal with them better;

  • It facilitates the memory of dreams and can make them more vivid if one sleeps with an amethyst under the pillow;
  • It makes sleep deeper and more restful;
  • It fosters inspiration and intuition;
  • It nourishes the spirit and helps to recognise one’s uniqueness;
  • It encourages inner growth;
  • It reveals the hidden potential of the soul;

Amethyst, with its distinctive purple colour, is also associated with the sixth chakra, also known as the forehead chakra or third eye (Ajna), which is the centre of intuition and wisdom. By using it, you can promote mental clarity and improve spiritual perception. In fact, the frequency of the colour violet is calming to the nervous system.

How I use amethyst

I generally use it in the form of drusa (quartz crystals, in this case amethyst, still attached to the matrix) to clean all the crystals I use both personally and for treatments. In fact, the amethyst drusa is one of the best ways to clean, recharge and regenerate crystals and to harmonise environments.

My customers

I recommend it as one of the first crystals to buy, both to harmonise personal and room energy, but also to clean and regenerate the crystals they use. In treatments I use drusa to clean the client’s aura before the treatment, on people who are too rigid both physically and mentally I place it on the sixth chakra. I also recommend keeping an amethyst crystal under the pillow, to anyone who has sleep problems, nightmares, those who cannot remember dreams.

I recently successfully advised a client who constantly suffered from stiffness problems in the neck area to wear an amethyst necklace between treatments.

#Quartz Citrine

The difference with the other quartz crystals mentioned above is only the colour, in fact citrine quartz is yellow. The colouring imparted by iron inclusions differs from the purple of amethyst, which has undergone higher heat radiation. Very often nowadays, fake citrine quartz can be found on the market in the sense that it is a heated amethyst. Even if the crystal bombarded by radiation is energetically destroyed, it takes on the distinctive yellow colour of citrine. It is clear that a crystal that no longer vibrates is not much use to us when we speak of the vibrational method. Yellow is the colour of the sun and creativity, it infuses joy and vitality and is also associated with abundance and positivity.

Physical properties of citrine quartz at vibrational level

Citrine quartz
  • Aids digestive and assimilation processes (stomach, spleen and pancreas) third chakra;
  • Strengthens the immune and nervous system;
  • It can alleviate the symptoms of diabetes in its early stages;

  • It contributes to the reworking of one’s impressions;
  • It stimulates confrontation with others;
  • It helps to overcome states of depression;
  • Avoid brooding;
  • It gives joy of life and vitality;
  • It instils confidence ;
  • It promotes a sense of individuality;
  • It makes one more dynamic;
  • It encourages openness, makes one extrovert;
  • It brings out the need for change, new experiences and self-realisation;

Because of its colour, it is also often associated with the third chakra. But it is also good in places where revitalisation is needed, e.g. in cases of diabetes, as an adjuvant to traditional treatments, it would be good to place it on the spleen and pancreas.

How I use citrine quartz

Its colour makes it suitable for all moments when we need light and warmth, in fact in times of sadness I can meditate on it holding it in my hand or resting it on the third chakra.

My customers

With some clients who suffered from slow digestion, I recommended wearing it in a long necklace that reached the third chakra, directly in contact with the skin. Action that led to excellent results.

Among the various quartz crystals are some that are less common, such as smoky quartz, rutilated quartz and ghost quartz.

#Quarzo Fumé

Smoky (or smoky) quartz gets its characteristic dark colour from inclusions of aluminium and lithium. Its energy is often used to work on physical and emotional trauma. This variety of quartz crystal is also rare, so it is not difficult to find commercially manufactured varieties with radioactive radiation.

Smoky quartz is useful to me in times of difficulty, especially for regaining lucidity and for meditation, when it is necessary to ‘clear the emotional fog’. This crystal is very special and I do not use it often.

#Quartz Rutilated

Rutile quartz (or maidenhair) is-a crystal characterised by needle-like inclusions of rutile that look like golden hair trapped in silicon. In the past, this crystal was believed to be able to store the energy of the sun, illuminating the soul and mind.

#Ghost Quartz

Ghost quartz is a mysterious and rare variety of quartz, characterised by inclusions or impurities that create figures within the crystal, often resembling ‘ghosts’ or miniature replicas of the crystal itself . These inclusions are a powerful symbol of growth and transformation.

Physical properties of ghost quartz at vibrational level

Ghost quartz

How I use it

It is an excellent companion for deep meditation and for those seeking to connect with their inner self. It helps to overcome fears and traumas.

Crystalline lattice of quartz crystals

Quartz crystals, like rock crystal, have a trigonal crystal structure that promotes harmony between body, mind and spirit. The trigonal crystal lattice: a bridge between heaven and earth, this sacred geometric shape is linked to the alchemical triad: salt (body), mercury (soul) and sulphur (spirit). With its tip pointing upwards, representing spiritual aspiration, while its base, anchored to earthly reality, symbolises gravity and matter.

This sacred geometric shape reflects the ancient alchemical triad of salt, mercury and sulphur, principles representing body, soul and spirit respectively. In the microcosm of the individual, as in the macrocosm of the universe, the triangle evokes the balance between mind, body and spirit. The trigonal crystal lattice, with its precise and symmetrical structure, amplifies these symbologies, offering a key to understanding the interconnection between man and the cosmos.

Quartz, due to its shared crystal structure, acts as a natural amplifier enhancing the beneficial properties of crystals, such as relaxation and emotional well-being and aura purification. Let’s also look at other properties shared by trigonal crystal lattice quartz crystals.

  • It harmonises energy on a physical and emotional level;
  • Purifies the aura and the environment;
  • It increases vital energy and promotes mental clarity;
  • It promotes concentration, relaxation and energy balance;

Cleaning and refilling quartz crystals

Each crystal accumulates the energies it comes into contact with, so it is essential to cleanse them regularly. Cleansing and charging methods vary according to the type of crystal.

  • Cleaning: A quartz crystal can be easily cleaned under running water to remove residual energies. In addition, you can use methods such as salt, moonlight, or holy palm smoke to purify crystals.
  • Recharging: To recharge a quartz, one of the safest solutions is to place it on an amethyst druse. This method is gentle and does not alter the properties of the crystal.

Some cleaning and refilling methods may be impractical or damage the more delicate minerals, which is why I prefer to purify them with running water (water should not be used on some minerals) and refill them with amethyst druse.

Additional advice

The frequency with which you clean and recharge a crystal depends on the use you make of it. Listen to your intuition. Each crystal is unique and may require customised treatment. By working with crystals, you realise the properties of each individual crystal in your possession and understand what is best at any given time to take advantage of them. Not all crystals can be cleaned and recharged in the same way. Always inquire about the specifications of your rock crystal before proceeding.

Meditation

For an even deeper meditative experience, many choose to integrate with crystals. Choosing the right crystal is highly personal and depends on individual intentions. An experienced crystal therapist can help you with targeted work either by choosing the most suitable mineral for your specific need or by accompanying you in a guided meditative experience.

For meditation, choose a comfortable environment where you will not be disturbed, place the crystal on your body or hold it in your hand, become familiar with its weight, temperature and energy. Each crystal offers a unique vibration, which can amplify the meditative intent.During meditation, observe your sensations, thoughts, and the types of images that arise while you meditate. All this information could be valuable messages from your unconscious.

For example, a rose quartz can promote unconditional love, while an amethyst can promote calmness and introspection. We could use a citrine quartz to work on slow digestion by placing it on the third chakra. Although most minerals are suitable for meditation, quartz crystals are perhaps the easiest to use as they are very versatile, easy to find and also inexpensive. For more targeted work on oneself, it is best to consult an experienced crystal therapist who can guide you in a deep meditation and discuss what emerges in terms of emotions and feelings.

Crystals and the environment

Quartz crystals are perfect for harmonising rooms; simply placing an amethyst or quartz crystal drusa in a room can bring calm and serenity. An amethyst drusa placed at the entrance acts as an energy shower that cleanses away heavy energies accumulated outside. Placed in the bedroom, an amethyst crystal drusa promotes a restful sleep free of nightmares. Rose quartz placed in the heart of the home where we spend most time harmonises relationships and promotes friendly sharing.

How to choose the right quartz crystal for you

The intuitive way can be a method to choose a crystal, usually feeling attracted by the colour, the name, the eyes being drawn to one crystal rather than another or the shape, are all indications that that crystal is resonating with our vibrations. We should not hesitate when this happens as it is our unconscious that is guiding us to choose a crystal for us.

Quartz crystals, with their varied shapes and colours, offer a wide range of benefits for physical, mental and emotional health. Their unique energy vibrations are able to balance the chakras, and the colour frequency of quartz crystals can interact with them, harmonising the body’s energy flow. Given the vastness of crystals in general, relying on an experienced crystal therapist is the wisest choice for a specific need or a particular phase in your life, a personalised consultation or a series of treatments can help.

In summary, quartz crystals are associated with physical, mental and emotional rebalancing, they can amplify an individual’s intention or make meditation and energy practices more effective. The use of quartz crystals can be a valuable tool for improving general wellbeing and achieving greater inner balance. Discover the benefits of crystal therapy: book a consultation today!
