Reiki self-treatment, how it works

Did you know that with Reiki you can also treat yourself? Self-treatment is one of the fundamental aspects of Reiki practice. From the very first level, you can place your hands on your body and open yourself to the presence of universal energy. It is a simple yet powerful way to regain balance, relax and sustain your well-being day after day.

In this article, you will learn about Reiki self-treatment, how to practice it, what the basic hand positions are and the benefits of regular practice. You will also find practical advice to help you get started simply and effectively.

Whether you need to recharge quickly or carve out a moment to release tension, Reiki can become your daily ritual of listening and regeneration.

What is Reiki Self-Treatment

Reiki is an energy harmonisation practice that allows you to connect with universal energy and use it to restore balance. During the treatment performed by a practitioner, energy is transmitted from the operator to the recipient. However, in self-treatment you attune, channel and direct the Reiki energy yourself by consciously placing your hands on the energy points of your body.

Reiki self-treatment helps restore balance on multiple levels, body, mind and spirit. In moments of stress or fatigue, even a just a few minutes of practice can help you reconnect with yourself and promote a more harmonious flow of energy. This practice is especially useful for relieving anxiety, promoting deep relaxation and opening up an inner space where transformation can occur naturally, without force. A simple yet powerful gesture to regain centredness even in the most intense days.

How to practise a Reiki self-treatment

To begin, find a quiet place where you can be comfortable and free from distractions. You can lie down or sit in a relaxed position. Start by bringing your attention to your breath and allowing it to flow slowly. Observe any thoughts that emerge, but try not follow them. Let them fade away. If this is difficult, gently bring your attention back to your breath.

It is important not force yourself to ‘feel’ something. Simply place your hands on the energy points listed below and let the Reiki energy do its work. Trust your sensitivity.

Once you are ready, begin by centring your heart and then proceed with the other basic hand positions. Hold each position for 2 to 5 minutes. Some positions may vary depending on the school of Reiki, but below are the most common ones.

Hands positions step by step

  • Initial centring: Place your hands together (one palm touches the other, with light pressure) in the centre of the chest. This helps to centre and harmonise the hands with the heart.
  • Fontanella (seventh chakra): Place your plams side by side on top of your head. This is the area of your crown chakra.
  • Eyes (sixth chakra): Cupped hands over the eyes with palms facing your face.
  • Throat (fifth chakra): Place one hand on top of the other to encircle the throat from the front.
  • Heart/chest (fourth chakra): Place your hands one on top of the other in the centre of the chest over the heart.
  • Solar plexus (third chakra): Place one hand on top of the other between where the rib cage ends and the abdomen (the “mouth of the stomach”)
  • Abdomen (second chakra): Place one hand on top of the other just below the navel.
  • Pelvis (first chakra): Place your hands on the sides of your lower abdomen, with the outside of the hands touching the pelvic bones.
  • Closing: Put your hands together in front of your heart and expèress gratotude.
Reiki self-treatment

With regular practice, you begin to notice that the body will guideyou in terms of how long to stay on each point. Some areas will need more time, while others may need less. Over time, you will become more attuned to when it is time to change positions.

Practice Tips

By practicing self-treatment regularly, your body becomes more sensitive to energy, and it will become easier to perceive the energy flow within it. A typical self-treatment session can last between 20 and 30 minutes, but if you are shot on time, even 10 minutes can be enough to recharge. Consistency is key, as regular practice helps to consolidate the benefits over time.

During your practice, reflect on the 5 principles of Reiki, which guide us toward greater awareness and well-being.

The best time for self-treatment can vary:

  • in the morning, to start the day feeling centered and vital.
  • in the evening, to release tension and promote restful sleep

Whenever you feel the need to reconnect, carve out a few minutes for yourself and immerse yourself in Reiki energy.

Prepare yourself simply, place your hands gently on the energy points, do not force anything, and, most importantly, listen to your body’s sensations. The feelings you experience can be endless. Warmth, coolness or a deep sense of relaxation are just a few indicators that the energy is flowing. Stay constant, even a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

Benefits of Reiki self-treatment

  • Deeper, restorative sleep: Reiki induces deep relaxation, calming both your mind and nervous system. As a result, you will experience more peaceful, restful sleep.
  • Strengthening immune system: Energy balancing stimulates your body’s natural ability to self-heal, supporting your immune system and increasing overall vitality.
  • Reduced psychosomatic symptoms: Reiki self-treatment helps release chronic tensions and discomforts related to stress, such as headaches, digestive issues or muscle pain. These are often linked to unexpressed emotions.

After the Reiki initiation (from a Reiki Master), it is recommended to practice self-treatment for 21 consecutive days to harmonise the chakras and integrate the new energy.
