Rescue Remedy for anxiety: how to use it

Do you often feel overwhelmed by anxiety? In the grip of negative thoughts? Are you afraid of failing an exam or job interview? Does a sudden shock make you lose clarity? Let’s find out how to use Rescue Remedy for anxiety and stress, a natural remedy that could be the answer to your peace of mind.

Are you curious about how Rescue Remedy can help you manage anxiety? In this article we will reveal the secrets of this floral blend and how these natural calming agents take care of your emotional well-being. We will show you how it works, when to use it and when it is best to use a customised floral blend.

What is Rescue Remedy

The well-known Bach Flower Remedies, of which Rescue Remedy is a part, are natural remedies that are applied to various states of mind to bring relief and serenity. At the beginning of the last century, an English physician named Edward Bach had a brilliant intuition: using flowers to heal the soul. After many experiments, he developed 38 flower essences that work as a tuner for our emotions and help us find serenity.

Dr Bach wanted to create a 39th remedy that would deal with the moods aroused by emergency situations, and to implement his intention he chose five of his discoveries that worked best on extreme emotions and trauma. Thus Rescue Remedy was born, used to calm mild states of anxiety and for immediate relief in times of emergency such as sudden shock or fainting.

Let’s see how this natural calming agent can be a valuable ally in transitory moments that cause us great anxiety and stress, and what the five essences are and how they work in synergy to simply and naturally help our minds regain calm and serenity.

The essences that make up Rescue Remedy

Originally, Rescue Remedy consisted of only three remedies, but over time Dr Bach felt the need to add two more to complete his emergency remedy.

The first three flowers that make up Rescue Remedy:

The version with only three flower essences was tested on fishermen who had suffered a shipwreck. By applying a few drops to the unfortunate, Bach noticed that they immediately began to recover.

The initial three flower remedies included:

  • Clematis: used for those who are dreamers and who, in order to escape reality, are capable of fainting. This remedy helps to get in touch with reality and regain interest in the present.
  • Impatiens: for those who do not trust on others, have an ‘if I do it myself, I can do it better’ personality, dominated by agitation and control. Impatiens is the essence that helps to regain patience, to not be in a hurry and to be irritated by what has to run its course.
  • Rock Rose: for those who are so frightened that they become paralysed, petrified. This remedy gently leads them towards courage and presence of mind in difficult or complicated situations.

The additional two flowers in the Rescue Remedy:

  • Cherry Plum: indicated for those who are afraid of losing control, resonating with this fear helps us to remain calm in times of chaos.
  • Star of Bethlehem: This is the ideal remedy for recent or past traumas that still affect the mental or emotional state. This is the essence that brings awareness and helps us understand grief, mourning and teaches us to accept the inevitable.

These flower essences create a synergy between them that acts on different levels, alleviating the psychological symptoms typical of anxiety and stress and relaxing the physical tensions associated with these states. Bach flowers against anxiety create a state of inner peace that makes us face situations with greater serenity.

The flower mixture provides emotional support in overcoming difficult moments and helps to get back in touch with oneself and the present, for a new emotional balance. Rescue Remedy, therefore, is a response to negative emotional and psychological states, because it encourages an immediate response when emotions take over the body and mind.

Bach flowers: how they work

Dr Bach spent much of his life searching for simple, natural remedies that would gently act on the symptoms his patients presented to him. He identified a vibrational component in plants that acts on an energetic level, each flower vibrating at a specific frequency that resonates with certain moods, such as fear, anxiety or sadness. This mechanism allows us to rebalance our emotions and promote wellbeing of body and mind.

When to use Rescue Remedy? It can be useful in states of emergency that create anxiety, shock or major scares such as:

  • Accidents;
  • Examinations;
  • Surgical interventions;
  • Fainting;
  • Panic attacks;
  • Physical or emotional trauma;
  • Nightmares.

Thanks to its relaxing properties, Rescue Remedy can help us find our centre again and face situations with more balance and positivity.

Rescue Remedy how to use it

Rescue Remedy for anxiety

Bach wanted the use of these essences to be as simple as their composition.

Usually the recommended dose is four drops under the tongue or diluted in a little water four times a day. We can follow this mode of intake as preparation for an event that might cause us anxiety such as surgery or childbirth.

In short, we can take it as preparation to face an emotionally difficult situation, in times of transition, before a school exam or a job interview. Taking Rescue Remedy a few days or weeks beforehand makes the mind more serene and calm, so we are better able to cope with the situations that will arise.

Even a short time after the initial shock, this approach can be useful in dealing with persistent trauma, helping to process the negative emotions related to the event.

For specific cases such as fainting, a few drops on the lips and temples help the person regain consciousness. Or for a sudden shock, we can take two drops every 15-30 minutes until we have calmed down and returned to the present.

Rescue Remedy is a valuable aid for states of anxiety and altered emotional states. It is an emergency remedy that goes beyond the specific need and therefore does not replace targeted and personalised treatment with Bach Flower Remedies.

No flower remedy replaces medical intervention, but it can be a valuable support to restore the person’s energy level and rebalance it on a psychological level.

Bach flowers when to use a customised blend

A customised Bach Flower Blend is tailored to meet an individual’s specific needs. A qualified counsellor will take the client’s individual needs into account and create a customised Bach Flower Blend.

So we will use a customised mix when they are there:

  • Complex and enduring situations such as deep emotional problems such as chronic anxiety, depression, trauma or relationship difficulties;
  • Mixed emotional states i.e., we have conflicting and complex emotions a customised mixture can help us balance the mood;
  • Long-term goals, when we want to make a deep and lasting change, a customised blend can accompany the transformation path.

The wrong way to use Rescue Remedy

Each individual is unique and has complex emotions related to their personal context, so only a customised blend will take into account individual nuances and offer more specific support. For example, a client of mine who was in love with Rescue Remedy, always carried it with her and used it extensively. In fact, she used it even when she was grieving for her mother to help herself through the most delicate moments, apparently all was well.

However, a few weeks after her mother’s disappearance, she began to experience the classic symptoms of a panic attack while driving. Leading to shortness of breath, some palpitation and cold sweats, Rescue Remedy certainly helped to manage these symptoms but it was not enough because the discomfort was deeper.

In fact, during the Bach Flower Counselling she talked to me about what the loss of such an important and present figure in her life had meant to her. We were able to trace the deepest emotions related to what her mother meant to her and also the emptiness that her loss had left.

To support this transition and help her to overcome the moments of despair that led to these panic attacks, I developed a mixture of five flowers to support her and help her to process the pain-related emotions. After almost ten years, she no longer suffers from panic attacks.

Ready to use or customised? Choose your path with Bach Flowers

Rescue Remedy is an excellent starting point for those approaching the world of Bach Flower Remedies, but let’s not forget that every individual is unique and their emotions are complex. A customised blend, created specifically for specific needs, can offer deeper and more lasting support.

Bach Flower Remedies are available as drops, and there are two distinct methods of preparation for these remedies:

  • A Stock bottle, that contains 7.5 or 10 ml of the Bach flower pure remedy.
  • Ready-to-use 30 ml bottles, that contains a base of water and brandy (for children with apple cider vinegar), plus a few drops of the remedies you want to take, to a maximum of seven flowers.

Both Rescue Remedy and customised blends have their role in promoting emotional well-being. The choice depends on your needs and the depth of your personal growth path.
